Diamond cutting is a subtractive manufacturing process. Unlike powder coating, where old paint is chemically dissolved and new paint is applied without altering the wheel’s structure, diamond cutting requires a CNC lathe to physically shave a layer of aluminium off the face of the wheel to remove kerb damage. Because metal is being permanently removed, there is a strict, non-negotiable limit to how many times an alloy wheel can undergo this process. Exceeding this limit compromises the structural integrity of the wheel and changes its fundamental geometry, making it unsafe for road use.
The spokes bear the rotational torque of the vehicle. Shaving them too thin creates weak points prone to stress fracturing.
If the outer rim edge is machined too far back, the tyre bead will no longer seat correctly, leading to sudden deflation.
Modern wheels have raised faces and recessed painted inserts. Over-cutting flattens the wheel, destroying the 3D design.
On some wheel designs, cutting too deep will machine into the tyre valve seat, preventing a secure air seal.
The central centre cap will begin to protrude awkwardly from the wheel face as the surrounding metal is shaved away.
Vehicle examiners can fail a wheel if it is visibly weakened or if the tyre seating geometry appears compromised.
As a strict industry standard, an OEM alloy wheel can generally only be diamond cut 2 to 5 times during its lifespan.
Before cutting, our CNC lathe uses a laser probe to map the wheel's exact profile and measure the remaining material thickness.
Our cutting tools are programmed to remove the absolute minimum amount of material necessary to clear the damage, often less than a millimetre.
If a kerb gouge is exceptionally deep, we will TIG weld fresh aluminium into the gouge before machining, rather than shaving the whole wheel down to the depth of the gouge.
If our laser scan indicates the wheel has been cut previously and lacks the material thickness for another safe pass, we will refuse to cut it.
If a wheel cannot be safely diamond cut again, we offer a full, factory-grade powder coat finish to restore it beautifully without removing metal.
Safety is paramount. Some unscrupulous operators will continue to machine a wheel as long as the customer pays, ignoring the structural implications. A wheel that has been shaved too thin is a catastrophic failure waiting to happen. Under heavy cornering or upon hitting a pothole, the weakened spokes can shatter, detaching the wheel hub from the rim entirely. At Autoshine Alloy Wheel clinic, our engineering team operates under strict safety tolerances. We will unequivocally refuse to diamond cut a wheel if it breaches safe operating parameters.
It can be difficult for a layman to tell. Look at the edge of the rim where it meets the tyre—if it looks unusually sharp or flat, or if the central badge protrudes past the metal face, it has likely been cut before. Our laser probe will give a definitive answer.
No. While we can TIG weld a specific deep kerb gouge on the edge, we cannot weld the entire face of the wheel to build up thickness. The heat required would destroy the metallurgical temper of the casting.
The best and safest option is a full powder coat refurbishment. We strip the wheel, repair the damage, and apply a highly durable, oven-cured powder coat in a colour of your choice (such as silver, anthracite, or black).
We provide a warranty on the clear lacquer finish (against peeling or flaking not caused by stone chips). However, because diamond cutting leaves bare metal under lacquer, it requires careful maintenance to prevent ‘white worm’ corrosion.
